John McGovern has more than 15 years of experience advising clients on all aspects of public affairs, including strategic positioning, earned media, advertising, and issues development. At Resolute, John counsels clients on strategic communications in the public policy arena and provides expertise in navigating complex decision-making processes in Illinois and Washington, D.C.
Most recently, John was a senior adviser to J. Dennis Hastert, former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. During his eight years with Speaker Hastert, John worked as press secretary to the Speaker as well as campaign spokesperson. He assumed other roles overseeing political communications, media relations, and campaign strategy.
John also served as Executive Director of Keep Our Majority PAC, Speaker Hastert’s national political action committee, through which John directed a national fundraising effort, acted as spokesman, and helped integrate the Speaker’s national political strategy with the National Republican Congressional Committee and GOP congressional candidates across the country.
John also has been involved with a number of political campaigns at the state and federal levels, serving as Campaign Manager for U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk’s first election victory and Communications Director for the successful campaign of U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald. John also worked for the Illinois Republican Party, former Illinois State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, and remains an adviser to Andy McKenna, Jr., chairman of the Illinois Republican Party.
On the civic front, John is a member of the Emerging Leaders Program for the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. He also serves as President of the Guild Board, Boys & Girls Club; Board Member of the President’s Leadership Council, Field Museum; Board Member of Rush Associates, Rush University Medical Center; and Board Member of the Next Generation Leadership Advisory Council, Chicago 2016 Committee. He is a long-time board member of the Irish Georgian Society and the Illinois Government Affairs Group.
John holds a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law and an A.B. in history and American studies from Princeton University. He is admitted to the Illinois Bar.
